This is the first day in my journey to better health! And I
must say it was off to a good start when I woke up feeling like a million
bucks! My meals were already planned through lunch and my previous cheeseburger escapade
wasn't written all over my face. I did my usual morning routine and was rushing
out the door in no time.
My first meal would be a 12oz meal replacement, which I would also be having for lunch since setting up this blog took more time than expected last night. I also had a banana, an orange, and a couple pieces of my hubby's homemade buffalo jerky to snack on if I needed. On my drive to work I was enjoying my breakfast until my stomach started burning, followed by a headache. Not how I expected to feel considering I have had this drink many times before. Then it hit me it has brown rice in it! Epic fail on my first meal of the day!! It slipped my mind since last week I was eating rice before my Dr. said it was affecting me.
So I ditched the drink since my stomach was upset and I was no longer hungry. The rest of my morning was spent contemplating if my whole day had been shot as far as eating allergy free. And then I opened my snack drawer at work only to be greeted by a Dove dark chocolate bar and thought I can start again tomorrow. Or can I? The thing is, I started this blog to help end my love affair with the foods I’m allergic to and break this cycle once and for all.
So I had to ask myself that annoying question about the glass being half empty or full. It was then that I decided not all was lost and accidents DO happen. So my co-worker, Jessica, graciously accepted my beloved Dove bar as I stood firm in my decision to break these habits. And just like that my glass was half full and I dodged a potential “cheat day.”
As for the lunch dilemma well today's menu isn't looking to healthy but at least it was allergy free. For those without food allergies let me explain to you how crazy reading labels can make you. There was a time in my life when I only read a product label for the amount of carbohydrates or the calories. Today, I read the label much differently and could frankly care less about the 2 categories I just mentioned. Reading the ingredients list takes work, a lot of work. Not all ingredients say corn, rice, wheat, gluten, or dairy. You see the industry has become quite sneaky when disclosing these ingredients to consumers. For example, did you know that gluten can be hidden in modified starches and if the final product contains less than a certain parts per million ratio they do not have to disclose this?

My lunch time dilemma was solved by using Google and searching
the perimeter of the store. All of the
things I’m allergic to are in most processed food. Today I was craving potato salad and went to
the deli to ask the lady for the list of ingredients. She looked at me like I was a crazy person
and brought out the packaging label. You
just thought they made that from scratch every day didn’t you! The third ingredient was corn (just my luck)and
I was absolutely starving since my breakfast didn’t work out. So I grabbed a
cup of fresh cut watermelon and some pepperonis that were labeled gluten free. Not exactly my idea of a nutritious meal but
my glass is still half full and I haven’t given in to temptation.
Tonight’s menu is going to be a little light since my
stomach is still not a happy camper. I’m
just going to finish my night off with an apple and dip it in peanut
butter. Despite the rice set back this morning
and the lunch dilemma I think my first day went well considering I could have
went to a fast food place and “glutened” myself silly.
