Day 15: Sicker than a dog

Today I woke up with puffy eyes and still felt pretty good.  Thank goodness I didn't work today because it was pure hell.  I was fine doing stuff around the house, took the dogs for a walk, and then it hit me.  I was praying to the porcelain goddess for quite sometime.  It was so bad and I hadn't even eaten anything yet!  So you can imagine how bad it was.  In between trips to the bathroom I tried to cut up some fresh fruit to calm my stomach.  That only made it worse, I couldn't even keep water down.

My poor Maddie wouldn't leave my side in the bathroom and I was thankful.  You see even at 27, sometimes you just need your mom.  This morning brought me to my knees and I was in the fetal position and contemplating asking my husband to come home and take care of me.  After about thirty minutes of pure hell I finally dragged myself to the couch and continued to pray for death.  On Antonio's lunch break he came home to check on me and brought a 7-up.

By that time I was starting to come out of whatever was wreaking havoc on my body.  You know me, I got online and looked at some forums about ingesting gluten incidentally after being gluten free.  Some people did say that vomiting was a symptom and some had it with in hours of ingesting gluten while others didn't get sick for a few days.  I hope that this has run its course because I don't think I could do it all over again!  This one lady said she was sick for two weeks!

I have been wondering what exactly would have made me this sick.  My hubby made garlic grilled chicken with steamed veggies last night and he was just fine.  Other than the balloon ride day I haven't had gluten in 15 days and was trying to figure out what it could be.  I decided to call the 800 numbers on all of my spices to see if it was the garlic he used last night.

I called several three stores with the spices I had in my pantry.  Costco and McCormick were awesome and very knowledge able with their products.  The Costco representative said they are going gluten free with most of their products.  The rep from McCormick told me the only spices I should worry about are mixed ones.  If it doesn't have an ingredient list on the label then it is a pure product.  I had her look through the mixed ones I had and only one contained corn the rest were all allergen free!

I was so excited until I called Walmart.  Not only was I placed on hold after telling her the items I had but when she came back on she said um after every word and stumbled through sentences.  I could also hear someone else in the background helping her who didn't sound much different.  She finally told me she would have to contact the manufacturer and call me back in a few days.  I told her about my experiences with the other companies and that I would just toss out my spices from Walmart.  She asked me why I wouldn't give her my information and why I would just throw something good away.  I told her that if she had food allergies she would understand how frustrating it can be for consumers to deal with companies who don't educate their employees.  Maybe this would have been acceptable when food allergies weren't as common as they are today.  I have had many bad experiences and  lost all interest in companies that don't take the time to educate their employees that are serving/selling food products. Sure call me picky but I don't want to spend the next several days feeling like I did today because someone "might" um get back to me.
